India have been beaten by 31 runs in the first ODI against South Africa on Wednesday. However, Shikhar Dhawan came back as though he had never been away; as though he had always been there, like an invisible shadow.
Shikhar Dhawan shrugged off his poor form and made a heroic comeback in the opening ODI of the three-match series against South Africa. Playing his first international game since July, Dhawan hit 79 off 84. Playing his first international game after over six months, India opener Shikhar Dhawan dazzled with the bat and emerged as the leading run-scorer from the Indian camp.
The left-handed batsman kept the scorecard ticking and hit 79 off 84 balls, striking at 94.05, before being bowled by Keshav Maharaj. En route his splendid knock, Dhawan leapfrogged Australia great Matthew Hayden, Joe Root and Kane Williamson in the list of highest run-getters in ODIs.
The Indian opener presently sits at the 58th spot in the overall list and needs exactly 500 more ODI runs to break into the top 50. The elite list is topped by Sachin Tendulkar, who piled up 18,426 runs in 462 ODIs. “We had a good start and I feel the wicket was slow, it was offering a bit of turn as well. So, when you are chasing 300 runs, when the middle-order comes to bat, it is not easy to play shots,” Dhawan said at the virtual post-match press conference.
India U19 captain Unmukt Chand introduced his arrival within the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia with elegant energy hitting throughout his second outing for Melbourne Renegades. He first Indian cricketer to play in Australia’s Big Bash T20 League .
The 28-year-old Chand, a right-handed batsman, made his BBL debut against Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL. He had disappointed with a six-run shot in his BBL debut, re-formed as he stroked his way to 29 runs with 22 balls including a four and two six. Chand opened his account with a very good pull shot in the back of the wicket for a six and proved to nbe an able to ally to captain Aaron Finch who scored 82 off 64 balls.and also registered his first maximum in the tournament.
Renegades were chasing a target of 171 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and they lost the match by 1 run. 2 runs were needed off the final delivery when Gurinder Sandhu dismissed Cameron Boyce and sealed a win for Thunders.
After the knock, Chand mentioned that he became grateful as a “dream” came correct with him playing at the smartly-known Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Taking to Twitter, Chand wrote: ” it has been a dream contrivance correct 2 play at the @MCG. Felt a childlike energy coming into the G. No longer the final result we wished, alternatively, a gud day out. Optimistically can capture lots of +ves frm this & apply on my nxt & coming adventures. Feels fair appropriate 2 be abet on the mammoth stage.”
Kohli has stunned everyone with his announcement to step down as India’s Test Captain. Under his time as captain, India played 68 Tests, winning 40, losing 17, and drawing 11 matches, with a win percentage of 58.82 while registering memorable wins in overseas and home conditions.
Now etizens are blaming the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its president Sourav Ganguly for ‘politics’ in the Indian cricket board which forced the batter to make the shocking decision. Sourav Ganguly faced considerable criticism with an overwhelming majority of fans blaming him and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
However, the three-year term of Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah, the BCCI president, and secretary, will end in September 2022. They can seek another term as per the rules and regulations of the board. While India have achieved much success in the bilateral series, few setbacks have been for the team.
Their other biggest achievement is to bring Rahul Dravid on board first as head of the National Cricket Academy and then as a head coach of the Indian team. While, some fans described it as the best news to come out of Indian cricket in a short time, others feared that the pair had already done enough damage to Indian Cricket.
Virat Kohli shocked the world by deciding to step down as Team India’s Test captain on January 15. He made this decision after his team’s Test series loss to South Africa. After relinquishing Test captaincy, Kohli is no longer a captain in any format and would continue to play as a pure batter.
The ex South African pacer Dale Steyn has said that the former would now be able to focus more on his batting and family. As per Steyn, Kohli took this step because of bio-bubbles and to be there for his family. Dale Steyn has said that one could get to see a better version of Virat Kohli as he no longer has captaincy burden.
“I suppose bubble life can make it really difficult. You take on so much responsibility as a captain, then you have got your family and you’re travelling, it really does boil down to family at the end of the day. I personally think so. Maybe these bio-bubbles and all had a role in it. I mean it really boils down to family for somebody like Virat. He’s got a young family right now,” Steyn told Star Sports on Wednesday.
“He has got a young family right now, captaincy if you’re a single man being a professional sportsman, it’s almost like a selfish thing, we all have to focus on ourselves to be able to get the best out of us and provide the best for the country. But the moment a young family comes in, some other things don’t matter much. Now I think, Virat Kohli has relinquished captaincy, he can focus on his family and then just focus on his batting. You might even see a better Virat Kohli now” Steyn added.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Bangar said on Wednesday that less burden on Virat Kohli will only help the former skipper become more dangerous as a batter. Bangar also highlighted that legendary cricketers in the past, including Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, had given up captaincy and gone on to do well in the remaining phases of their careers.
After a long wait, India’s Unmukt Chand finally got the chance to make his Big Bash League (BBL) debut for Melbourne Renegades on Tuesday. The elegant right-hand batter, who retired from Indian cricket last year
However, Unmukt’s BBL debut didn’t quite go according to plan as he was out dismissed for just 6 runs against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne. Walking in at No.4 with Renegades 132/2 chasing Hurricanes’ 182/5 with five overs remaining, the batter had the chance to be his team’s hero in his very first outing. But it wasn’t to be.
The player attempted to clear the boundary ropes but the shot was not timed well and found the fielder at deep midwicket. and his innings was cut short. The Melbourne Renegades did not capitalize on their start and lost the game despite half-centuries from both skipper Aaron Finch (75) and Shaun Marsh (51).
Meanwhile, this has been a very disappointing campaign for Melbourne Renegades. The Reds have won only three of their 13 matches and are currently reeling at the bottom of the points table. The Hobart Hurricanes won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a brilliant score of 182/5 on board. In response, the Renegades were riding well but in the end, failed to cross the line suffering a six-run defeat after finishing 176/6 in 20 overs.
Ever since Kohli stepped down as the Test Captain, the hunt for red-ball captain began. While some believe that Rohit Sharma should lead India in all formats of Cricket, others opine that young talent such as KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant should lead India in Test Cricket.
With the induction of Rohit Sharma as India’s new captain in the two limited Overs format, the Test captaincy post now lies vacant with one of KL Rahul or Rohit Sharma likely to be handed that responsibility. However, India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is more than just open to take that extra responsibility, and has expressed his willingness to lead Team India in the longest format of the game.
The first name in consideration to replace Kohli is Rohit, who has only grown in stature within Indian cricket across formats in the last one year. Appointed the new white-ball skipper, Rohit has undergone a major transformation as a Test cricketer. On the other hand Rahul is more of a long-term captaincy candidate than Rohit to replace Virat Kohli. Rahul also has had anotable revival to his Test match career with the bat. And he can be Kohli’s potential replacement.
Ravichandran Ashwin could also be an option to replace Kohli at the helm. The veteran off-spinner is one of the greats of the modern game. And he Ashwin has prior experience of captaincy a team in the IPL as well. Notably Jasprit Bumrah, right-arm pacer may also be in consideration for Test captaincy. But there are two major issues: one is tactical and the second is physical. If India do appoint Bumrah as their Test captain, they will have to do away with their policy of him skipping home Tests and play him every game, making injuries more likely.
Former Indian all-rounder Atul Wassan has said that he is not one bit surprised about the fact that Virat Kohli gave up the test captaincy of India after losing the test series against South Africa.
In the span of four months, Kohli has relieved himself from leading the Indian team from all formats. First, he stepped down from T20I captaincy in November last year. Ahead of the South Africa tour, the national selectors decided to hand over the complete white-ball captaincy duties to Rohit Sharma and a day after India lost the Test series to South Africa 1-2, Kohli took to his official Twitter handle to announce his decision to quit the red-ball captaincy.
Considering Kohli’s decision, former fast bowler Atul Wassan said that the development does not surprise him at all because after India’s bad show at the T20 World Cup. “Nothing shocks me. What shocked me was MS Dhoni quitting Test captaincy in the middle of the series in Australia. I think the way things have been going by the last couple of months India’s debacle in the T20 WC there was pressure on him,” Wassan told.
“He is not getting runs. At times he is pointing fingers at other players and as a captain he must do that to egg them on and I totally support him for that but the problem was that earlier he was leading by example but lately the thing is that his batsmanship has come down. “, he added.
Wassan further said that things could have been different had India won the three-match Test series in South Africa. “Every batsman, every player goes through that and it could accentuate that he was captaining all three formats. He also started the conundrum when he said he doesn’t want to do T20 captaincy which was the right decision but I think the board actually took it in a skewed manner and he never expected that he would lose his 50 over captaincy because his goal was to win the World Cup. This is what was missing from his cupboard,” .
The Indian cricket team did cross a line in the third Test against South Africa, with the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and R Ashwin accusing the broadcaster of tampering with the DRS images. Though there’s no denying that DRS could’ve malfunctioned in reviewing the LBW dismissal of Dean Elgar.
However, the Hawkeye element of DRS suggested that the ball would have crossed the stump. The ball had, in fact, landed in the middle of the stumps and hit Elgar’s pad in the middle. Yet, DRS showed the ball, on hitting the pads, would have gone over the stumps. The incident left the Indian camp furious, with the likes of Ashwin, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli even accusing the hosts’ broadcaster of tempering with the visuals.
Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar has reacted to Virat Kohli’s outburst on the stump mic during the Cape Town Test, saying it was an avoidable situation and something that the India captain could have prevented. Gavaskar is not happy with the incident either. He believes the stump mic capturing something is one thing but going intentionally near the stumps and saying stuff isn’t good.
When you are playing for your country… when you are trying your best to win, every single moment that you are out there, you can lose your composure and cool. If you say something while you are walking, it’s a different matter, but when you go towards a stump mic you know it is going to pick up stuff then it doesn’t look good so that was something that was avoidable,” Gavaskar said on Sports Today.
“Tempers are lost on a sporting arena. You see any sports – whether it is football, cricket or any other sport – tempers are lost. I don’t think they were trying to insinuate something But if you look at it, how would we Indians feel if an overseas team captain did this went to the stump mic and say something to the television channel covering the series. We wouldn’t accept it,” added Gavaskar.
