Atletico Hold Off Manchester United at 1-1 in First Leg

Last night the Champions League saw its second set of Round of 16 teams play their first leg as Atletico Madrid were greeted by Manchester United at home.

The red devils dawned on the dark blue and black away jerseys and looked to beat a very game Atletico Madrid. However, a rare diving header from a striker put the visitors behind when Joao Felix scored in the 7th minute and scored an early goal to get the lead.

The Spaniards played very well by holding off United’s lacklustre attack throughout the match. Ralph Rangnik continues to struggle with a star studded line up performing inconsistently.

Though the score by the end was 1-1, Atletico edged out United in terms of style of play, goals, pass accuracy and overall shots on goal.

The equaliser came very late at minute 80 when Anthony Elnaga made a quick break for it alongside Fernandes. Bruno Fernandes gave the assist for the equaliser proving his worth for the Red Devils once again.

The red devils did manage to get a hold of the possession by the latter half of the second period but just couldn’t convert any opportunity to score a winner.

The overall style of play by United has worsened over the past few months, however one thing that has improved is how aggressively and quickly United have been getting the ball back from their opponents. A similar technique to that of the struggling Barcelona side.

Atletico who have also had a bad month and have dropped a few positions in the La Liga standings, will look to be more aggressive at the Old Trafford. The match will be even more special as United have recently lost a few games at home as well.

Diego Jota injured Against Inter Milan As Liverpool Take The Advantage

The Reds travelled all the way to Italy last night to face the giants known as Inter Milan.

The Champions League saw its Round of 16 extend as Liverpool faced Inter Milan and Bayern Munich faced fellow Germans Salzburg.

RB Salzburg managed to get a goal in and keep Bayern Munich limited to a goal as they drawed the match. Over in Italy, Inter Milan just couldn’t manage to get in a goal as Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool played keep away with the possession.

With Roberto Firmini and Mohhamad Salah getting in on the goal action within just 8 minutes of each other.

Meanwhile Liverpool forward Diogo Jota got himself in trouble as he was injured late in the game. “I am happy with everything apart from Diogo [Jota] going off,” said Klopp.

“The ankle was swollen at the break so we had to change,” added Klopp.

Pressed further on the injury, the German said: “Twisted ankle, it was swollen. So that’s not a good sign but we have to see.

“We will check it as early as possible tomorrow [Thursday] but we need further assessment.”

“Luis [Diaz] is so natural when he comes on so that is all very helpful,” said Klopp.

“Roberto Firmino needed time to get in the game because he got the balls in the most difficult areas.

“After he scored the goal you could see the confidence back and all of a sudden the ball was our friend again.

“After the game I couldn’t care less but in the game we didn’t finish situations often enough. Very often, their situations were offside. This really kills me. You can see it is offside but they let it run and then forget to raise the flag.”

Mbappe’s Last Minute Winner Puts PSG In Driver’s Seat

Kylian Mbappe played one of his best games so far as he faced off against the visitors under the lights of the Parc de Princes in Paris.

The giants of Paris and the Giants of Real Madrid faced off in an epic encounter last night in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. The Parisian leaders dominated in terms of possession as the visitors played catch-up.

With the likes of Vinicius, Benzema and Asensio failed to convert any of their chances throughout the tumultuous affair as the two teams fought for the second leg advantage.

Effective this season and onwards, UEFA have enforced the new rule that ensures no additional weightage to the crucial away goals for any 2 leg match-ups. This means that the team playing any away games from the Round of 16 and onwards will not have any additional advantage if they score and will instead count as a regular goal.

This new rule is projected to increase the number of games decided under extra time and penalties. With this additional nugget of excitement, both PSG and Real tried to score early to get the advantage going ahead into the second leg. However, PSG’s homegrown talent proved to be fatal for the visitors as Kylian Mbappe after many attempts finally managed to sneak one under the legs of Thibaut Cortois at the very last minute.

During the normal time, Messi received a penalty opportunity as Kylian was fouled in the box earlier. PSG’s Neymar also returned to action for PSG in the Champions League after suffering an injury in late 2021.

Breaking News: Alphonso Davies Diagnosed With Rare Heart Condition

Bayern Munich’s star full back has been diagnosed with a life threatening heart condition that has ruled him out of any further practice and matches in terms of football until treated.

After Davies recently recovered from Covid-19, he has had heart muscle inflammation that has caused a lot of concern in the Munich camp. The most recent match Munich played was against Borussia Mochengalbach who seemingly have Munich’s number as they won again with a 2-1 scoreline.

Bayern boss Nagelsmann commented on Davies yesterday saying, “Yesterday, during our follow-up examination that we do with every player that has had Covid-19, we detected signs of mild myocarditis, i.e. an inflammation of the heart muscle.”

“He has stopped training for now, so he won’t be available to us for the next weeks.”

“This myocarditis isn’t too dramatic based on the ultrasound, but more simply signs of an inflammation. Nevertheless, it needs to heal and that will no doubt take some time.”

There hasn’t been a date yet announced or decided as to when Davies will return but in a situation like this, his health should be the top priority above his game. This year, legendary striker Kun Aguero also retired early after a heart condition and post last year’s EURO cup, Christian Eriksen has been treated differently after his mini heart attack like situation.

With Bayern also getting ready for Champions League competition in February, they would want to check Davies’ condition and try to get him back as soon as possible.
