Former Indian Captain Sunil Gavaskar warns Rohit Sharma, coach Rahul Dravid, ahead of T20 World Cup

India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the third T20 International to make a 3-0 clean sweep in the three-match series on Saturday. Team India recorded 11 consecutive victories in this format.

However,  former captain Sunil Gavaskar has given a warning to coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma. The former player said that Indian bowlers gave away runs at a high economy rate in the final five overs. In a conversation with Star Sports Sunil Gavaskar said that India need to address this issue and cannot afford to concede runs heavily often. He also also praised Sri Lanka team for their hitting ability, especially in the death overs.

The legendary batsman has warned India ahead of the T20 World Cup in mind. Harshal Patel was smashed for 42 runs in two overs while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah conceded 16 and 14 runs respectively as India gave away 78 runs in the death overs.

“It is not a sign of worry but it is something they have got to look at because they cannot afford to have it regularly. One match, it happens that is the nature of the format. There might be partnerships in the last 5-6 overs where you will get 80-90 runs like we saw today,” Gavaskar said in a conversation.

“Shanaka was magnificent today. Even Nissanka, look at that shot against Bumrah, of all the people. It isn’t easy to hit against Bumrah. It is an issue that India cannot afford to sweep under the carpet. They have to worry about the death-over bowlers. Who should be bowling the first 10 and the last 8? These are issues that India need to think about,” Gavaskar added.

“Jasprit Bumrah can walk into any cricket team in the world”, said Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar praised Jasprit Bumrah and said that the player was someone who could just walk into any team in the world. Bumrah was not in action for the West Indies series, but he will return for the Sri Lanka series. The Indian vice-captain will be joined by Siraj, Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Avesh Khan to lead India’s bowling attack.

Sunil Gavaskar said that India have bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah who can walk into any team. “There is Bumrah. Don’t forget him. He will walk into any team in the world, not just the India team, any team. Then you have Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami…spoiled for choices,” he said.

Sunil Gavaskar further said that Indian pacer Deepak Chahar is a terrific swing bowler and can swing the ball both ways and trouble the batters. “He is a terrific swing bowler. He has that extra pace as well. He isn’t express but he gets the ball to move at a decent pace which makes it difficult for a batsman. And he has got both the in-swinger and the out-swinger without a noticeable change in action. So when you have someone like him and have Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the bench after two fine performances in the series, India are blessed as far as riches in bowling are concerned,” said Gavaskar in a chat on Star Sports.

Team India have recently whitewashed West Indies in three matches ODI and as many games T20I series. The Rohit Sharma-led side registered a thumping win against the carrabbeans. India will next face Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series, which will be played from 24th March to 27th March in Lucknow and Dharamsala.

Sunil Gavaskar Points to ‘Lack Of Balance’ in the Current Indian Team

India lost the first one-day international against South Africa by 31 runs in Paarl on Wednesday, despite being in a commanding position with both ball and bat.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his thoughts after the first ODI between India and South Africa which the visitors lost by 31 runs. He has pointed out a shortcoming in the current Indian cricket setup that is harming Indian cricket. The reason for India not winning an ICC tournament since 2013 is the lack of all-rounders in the team.

Gavaskar stated that, “there is only one reason why this team has been left disappointed in ICC tournaments (ODI and T20I). If you look at the teams that won the 1983 and 2011 World Cups or even the 1985 World Championship of Cricket-winning side, they were all full of outstanding all rounders “

“There were many batters who could bowl and the bowlers could bat. The numbers 6,7 and 8 requires all-rounders which all these victorious teams had. The likes of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina could bowl and bat very well. This is the one shortcoming that the Indian team has over the past two or three years, as a result of which the captain has not had many options and the team has lacked flexibility,” Gavaskar added.

India play South Africa in the second ODI in Paarl on January 21. They need to win this game to keep the series alive.

“That was avoidable” : Sunil Gavaskar on Virat Kohli’s stump mic outburst

The Indian cricket team did cross a line in the third Test against South Africa, with the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and R Ashwin accusing the broadcaster of tampering with the DRS images. Though there’s no denying that DRS could’ve malfunctioned in reviewing the LBW dismissal of Dean Elgar.

However, the Hawkeye element of DRS suggested that the ball would have crossed the stump. The ball had, in fact, landed in the middle of the stumps and hit Elgar’s pad in the middle. Yet, DRS showed the ball, on hitting the pads, would have gone over the stumps.
The incident left the Indian camp furious, with the likes of Ashwin, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli even accusing the hosts’ broadcaster of tempering with the visuals.

Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar has reacted to Virat Kohli’s outburst on the stump mic during the Cape Town Test, saying it was an avoidable situation and something that the India captain could have prevented. Gavaskar is not happy with the incident either. He believes the stump mic capturing something is one thing but going intentionally near the stumps and saying stuff isn’t good.

When you are playing for your country… when you are trying your best to win, every single moment that you are out there, you can lose your composure and cool. If you say something while you are walking, it’s a different matter, but when you go towards a stump mic you know it is going to pick up stuff then it doesn’t look good so that was something that was avoidable,” Gavaskar said on Sports Today.

“Tempers are lost on a sporting arena. You see any sports – whether it is football, cricket or any other sport – tempers are lost. I don’t think they were trying to insinuate something But if you look at it, how would we Indians feel if an overseas team captain did this went to the stump mic and say something to the television channel covering the series. We wouldn’t accept it,” added Gavaskar.
