Ravi Bishnoi gets maiden Call-Up for West Indies Series

On Wednesday BCCI announced Team India’s squad for upcoming T20 and ODI series. And young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi was rewarded with a maiden India call-up for the upcoming T20 series against the West Indies.

Bishnoi had impressed one and all with his bowling for the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2020 and continued his performance for the franchise in the IPL 2021 as well. This was a well-earned reward for his consistency with the ball. India try out different combination, especially with wrist-spinners. Notably India had great success with wrist spinners but from the white-ball series against England at home, the famous Kul-Cha pair was dropped after a string of poor performances.

While, senior wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav also returned to the white ball set up after a knee surgery. “Kuldeep Yadav is making a comeback and Ravi Bishnoi is the new face in the team for West Indies series. The team will be led by Rohit Sharma,” a senior BCCI source told.

India will host West Indies for a three match ODI and three match T20 series from February 06-February 20 after returning from South Africa. The IND vs WI ODI series will be played from 6 February in Ahmedabad.

According to report, Rohit Sharma Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja are set to return to India’s squad for the limited-overs series against  West Indies. The national selection panel, headed by former India pacer Chetan Sharma, is set to pick the squad this week for three ODIs and three T20Is. However, the team selection meeting, which is set to happen this week, will be an interesting one as some senior players like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin, after their indifferent performance against South Africa in their 0-3 ODI series defeat, will come under the scanner.

Meanwhile, having recovered from a hamstring injury that forced him to miss India’s tour to South Africa, Rohit will formally take charge of India’s ODI squad in the series opener. “Rohit is fit and available for the series against the West Indies,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. By the time, the West Indies series starts, it will be more than seven and half weeks of rehabilitation and recuperation for Rohit. He is already training in Mumbai and is expected to be in Bangalore for the fitness test and get a formal okay from the National Cricket Academy,” the BCCI source informed.
Notably Jasprit Bumrah played every game on the SA tour and is likely to be rested. Mohammed Shami, who was rested for SA ODIs, is expected to be back for the series.

IPL 2022 Auction New Rule: Lucknow and Ahmadabad Retained Players

But for the new two teams in Lucknow and Ahmedabad, they were permitted to retain up to three players via a combo of at least two Indian players and 1 foreigner.

Meanwhile, the two new IPL teams Ahmedabad and Lucknow have officially named their draft picks ahead of the upcoming mega auction for the 2022 season. Team Lucknow, paid Rs 17 crore for Rahul. Along with that, the franchise signed Marcus Stoinis for 9.2 crore and Rs 4 crore for young Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi.

On the other hand, Pandya, who won multiple IPL titles with Mumbai Indians, was picked by the CVC-capital owned Ahmedabad franchise for Rs 15 crore. Ahmedabad also paid up the same amount of money to acquire the services of star Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan. India batter Shubman Gill, for Rs 8 crore, was the third pick by the franchise.

Venkatesh Iyer To Be Groomed As A Long-Term Replacement For Hardik Pandya In Team India

In the first ODI at Paarl, India took the field with six bowling options including debutant Venkatesh Iyer, who made his maiden international appearance in a T20I against New Zealand in November. However, Rahul didn’t hand the bowler a single over throughout the match as five bowlers – Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, and Yuzvendra Chahal bowled all fifty overs in the game.

After making his T20I debut against New Zealand in November and a memorable campaign for Madhya Pradesh in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, Iyer was given a call-up to the ODI squad for the South Africa series. However he has played in four games for India but has only bowled 18 deliveries since his debut in November 2021. Despite fewer opportunities to bowl, he has managed to register a dismissal.

With South Africa stitching a 200-plus-run partnership around Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen, Iyer was not given the ball despite India’s bowlers not tasting any success. Although in the press conference, India batter Shikhar Dhawan explained why Venkatesh wasn’t asked to bowl, saying that the spinner bowled well but numbers throw up a contrasting story. Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin combined to pick just 1 wicket for 106 runs. The decision by Rahul was met with criticism from former Indian cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Aakash Chopra, who wondered whether the team management sees Iyer as an all-rounder.

However, To put things into further context, he was picked to be a batter who could bowl medium pace – the rarest of rare combinations on the Indian circuit. With Hardik Pandya’s bowling fitness continuing to be an issue, the Indian team management called upon Iyer in a bid to groom him for a similar role.

Selectors and management have shown faith in Venkatesh Iyer by fast-tracking him into the national team setup. But the fact remains that they will never know how ready he is for international cricket unless he is thrown into the deep end of the pool.

South Africa vs India, 1st ODI : Probable XI

After a heartbreaking loss against South Africa in red-ball cricket both teams face-off in the three-match One-Day International series. KL Rahul will lead the Indian team in absence of injured Rohit Sharma. Besides, Jasprit Bumrah has been named vice captain.

India and South Africa will play a three-match ODI series starting from 19th January. The first match will be played at Boland Park, Paarl. However, Team India have already suffered two huge blows from the squad standpoint. Washington Sundar couldn’t board the flight as he was tested position ahead of the tour. Whereas Mohammed Siraj suffered an injury in the second Test, and he is unlikely to recover. Jayant Yadav and Navdeep Saini have been announced as their replacements.

It will be interesting to see what sort of combination team India plays against South Africa after the return of opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan. There is a chance that India might hand all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer ODI debut as well. As far as opening combination is concerned, Rahul and Dhawan will open with Virat Kohli at number three. Shreyas Iyer and Surya Kumar Yadav will bat at four and five respectively followed by wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant.

India has five bowling options in the form of Thakur, Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar/Siraj, Chahal and Bumrah. However, India will have to decide between Iyer and Ravi Ashwin while Yuzvendra Chahal is set to feature as prime spinner. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will lead the bowling attack. It could be a toss up between Deepak Chahar and Shardul for the third seamer option.

Bumrah’s Five-For Gives India the Advantage

On day 2 of the last and deciding test match between India and South Africa in Cape Town, South Africa started out on the pitch with bat in hand as they tried to chase down the target set by India at 223 runs.

The Indian bowling line-up did pick up wickets regularly between the start and the second innings as they took out Makram, Keshav Maharaj and Dussen. However, the biggest wicket came when India managed to get Buvuma as Petersen was left on the pitch without any good partners to back him up. This followed a batting crumble as India took the upper hand by stopping South Africa from getting to the target. South Africa lost their wickets with 14 runs still to get as India were called back to bat.

The bowling performance by India was incredible. With the likes of Yadav and Shami getting a couple of wickets each and Lord Thakur getting one of his own, Bumrah led the pack with his insane five-for which included the wickets of Elgar, Makram, Jansen, Petersen and Ngidi.

The Indian batting line up started as usual with Agarwal and Rahul at the top. This time around however the opening bowlers knew what to do and quickly got the two opening wickets. However, captain Kohli and the modern wall Pujara held down the fort for India as they ended the day at 57 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. India now have a lead of 70 runs as they begin Day 3.
