Now to go and play his 100th game, it’s been a wonderful one. He has done exceedingly well in this format, changed so many things in the way team is moving forward, it’s been brilliant to watch that.” Rohit said in the virtual press conference ahead of the Mohali Test.

When asked his favourite Kohli knock, Rohit picked Kohli’s Test hundred in South Africa, back in 2013. “As an individual, my best memory of him is his Test hundred against South Africa in 2013. The pitch we were batting on was very challenging; it had a lot of bounce and a lot of us were playing a Test in South Africa for the first time. He scored a hundred in first innings and 90 odd in the second innings. That hundred for me is his best. Then there is Perth 2018 but 2013 South Africa beats Perth,” Rohit said.

Former Indian Captain Sunil Gavaskar warns Rohit Sharma, coach Rahul Dravid, ahead of T20 World Cup

India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the third T20 International to make a 3-0 clean sweep in the three-match series on Saturday. Team India recorded 11 consecutive victories in this format.

However,  former captain Sunil Gavaskar has given a warning to coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma. The former player said that Indian bowlers gave away runs at a high economy rate in the final five overs. In a conversation with Star Sports Sunil Gavaskar said that India need to address this issue and cannot afford to concede runs heavily often. He also also praised Sri Lanka team for their hitting ability, especially in the death overs.

The legendary batsman has warned India ahead of the T20 World Cup in mind. Harshal Patel was smashed for 42 runs in two overs while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah conceded 16 and 14 runs respectively as India gave away 78 runs in the death overs.

“It is not a sign of worry but it is something they have got to look at because they cannot afford to have it regularly. One match, it happens that is the nature of the format. There might be partnerships in the last 5-6 overs where you will get 80-90 runs like we saw today,” Gavaskar said in a conversation.

“Shanaka was magnificent today. Even Nissanka, look at that shot against Bumrah, of all the people. It isn’t easy to hit against Bumrah. It is an issue that India cannot afford to sweep under the carpet. They have to worry about the death-over bowlers. Who should be bowling the first 10 and the last 8? These are issues that India need to think about,” Gavaskar added.

Sanju Samson has got talent, has skillset to succeed, said Rohit Sharma

India and Sri Lanka will play the first T20I of the three-match series on Thursday. The victory over West Indies catapulted India to the top of the ICC rankings in T20Is, however Rohit Sharma know that these bilateral series wins will eventually count for nothing if India falter in the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia this year.

Meanwhile, in the press conference ahead of the T20I series against Sri Lanka on Wednesday, Rohit Sharma was asked about Sanju Samson.  Notably, the BCCI recently announced the squad for the series against Sri Lanka. Sanju Samson who last played during an away series against Sri Lanka in July 2021, has also been added.

“As a team management, we see lot of potential, we see lot of talent and we see lot of match-winning abilities in that individual. I hope we give Sanju Samson that confidence when he gets playing for us, and whenever he gets an opportunity I hope he understands that and definitely he is under consideration, which is why he is part of this team “.Captain Rohit Sharma said in the press conference .

“His back-foot play is superb, some of the shots you must have seen during the IPL, the pick-up pull, the cut shots, standing and delivering over bowler’s head. Those kinds of shots are not easy to play and I believe when we go to Australia, you need those kind of shot-making ability and Samson does has it in him. I just hope that he utilises his potential to the maximum.” Rohit added.

The fact that Samson has been given another chance despite India having two quality wicketkeeper-batters in Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul just shows how much the Indian team management trusts in the abilities of Samson. ” You know that guy has got talent. Whenever we have seen him bat in IPL and all of that, he has just produced an innings where everyone goes over the moon watching that inning,”.

“He has got the skill-set to succeed. Now that is the whole point about this sport, a lot of people have skill-set, have talent, but it is how you utilise them is the most critical part and I think, it is up to Sanju to understand how he want to utilise the talent and how he can maximise it,” Rohit said.
