Twitter Reacts: South Africa beat India by 7 wickets in the second ODI

South Africa beat India by 7 wickets in the second ODI and seal the ODI series by 2-0 on Friday. The final ODI match to be played in Cape Town on Sunday.

Earlier, India made 287/6 against South Africa in the second ODI. Rishabh Pant top-scored for India with 85 off 71 balls while skipper K L Rahul made 55 off 79 balls. Shardul Thakur contributed with an unbeaten 38-ball 40 towards the end of the innings.

South Africa have chased down this total with ease and have carried the momentum they gained in the Test series into this ODI series. India will be disappointed with their effort with the ball especially after a decent performance with the bat earlier in the day. Indian spinners have been outbowled by the South African spinners in both the games and as a result, India have been beaten comprehensively in this ODI series.

Except Jasprit Bumrah no one showed any resistance as the likes of Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan went about their business. It was an abject surrender and raised serious questions on KL Rahul the captain, who instead of rallying his troops went mum in a crisis.

Rafael Nadal Hasn’t Even Hit Top Gear Yet

The 20 time grand slam winner looks like he’s on his way to winning his 21st grand slam title or at least put up a huge fight to become the first ever person in history to get to 21 grand slam championships in history.

With Djokovic out of the picture for this years’ Australian Open, it was understood Nadal will need to just go through the motions and try harder to get to another title as it might be his last chance to get to one.

So far in this year’s Australian Open, Nadal has shown only dominance winning 2 straight matches with 6 straight sets and currently warming up for his Round 3 match scheduled for today at 2:45 PM IST emanating from the Rod Laver Arena against Kachanov.

Although the fans might be gearing up for a Zverev and Nadal semi final and possibly a Nadal vs Tsitsipas finals match, the Spaniard is not looking at the bigger picture currently but instead taking it match by match in the Australian sub continent.

“Well, the positive thing is I achieved much more than I ever dreamed. I was able to spend almost 20 fantastic years on the tour. The rest of the things nothing positive because arrives in the end,” Nadal said. “When you get older, the watch never stops, no (smiling)? That’s the circus of life.”

“You need to accept that. But it’s all good with me with that. I don’t know. I am in the third round. I need to win very tough matches to be there. Is not in my mind now. I have enough work I don’t like,” the Spaniard said.

“I think playing against Khachanov now, probably Khachanov, going to be a big challenge. Always is a big challenge against Karen. In my situation today going to be even more. I never think that far. You can imagine now less than ever, no? Just staying focused on my daily work, on what’s coming, and that’s it. One moment in time, that’s it,” he added.

Sunil Gavaskar Points to ‘Lack Of Balance’ in the Current Indian Team

India lost the first one-day international against South Africa by 31 runs in Paarl on Wednesday, despite being in a commanding position with both ball and bat.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his thoughts after the first ODI between India and South Africa which the visitors lost by 31 runs. He has pointed out a shortcoming in the current Indian cricket setup that is harming Indian cricket. The reason for India not winning an ICC tournament since 2013 is the lack of all-rounders in the team.

Gavaskar stated that, “there is only one reason why this team has been left disappointed in ICC tournaments (ODI and T20I). If you look at the teams that won the 1983 and 2011 World Cups or even the 1985 World Championship of Cricket-winning side, they were all full of outstanding all rounders “

“There were many batters who could bowl and the bowlers could bat. The numbers 6,7 and 8 requires all-rounders which all these victorious teams had. The likes of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina could bowl and bat very well. This is the one shortcoming that the Indian team has over the past two or three years, as a result of which the captain has not had many options and the team has lacked flexibility,” Gavaskar added.

India play South Africa in the second ODI in Paarl on January 21. They need to win this game to keep the series alive.

Venkatesh Iyer To Be Groomed As A Long-Term Replacement For Hardik Pandya In Team India

In the first ODI at Paarl, India took the field with six bowling options including debutant Venkatesh Iyer, who made his maiden international appearance in a T20I against New Zealand in November. However, Rahul didn’t hand the bowler a single over throughout the match as five bowlers – Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, and Yuzvendra Chahal bowled all fifty overs in the game.

After making his T20I debut against New Zealand in November and a memorable campaign for Madhya Pradesh in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, Iyer was given a call-up to the ODI squad for the South Africa series. However he has played in four games for India but has only bowled 18 deliveries since his debut in November 2021. Despite fewer opportunities to bowl, he has managed to register a dismissal.

With South Africa stitching a 200-plus-run partnership around Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen, Iyer was not given the ball despite India’s bowlers not tasting any success. Although in the press conference, India batter Shikhar Dhawan explained why Venkatesh wasn’t asked to bowl, saying that the spinner bowled well but numbers throw up a contrasting story. Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin combined to pick just 1 wicket for 106 runs. The decision by Rahul was met with criticism from former Indian cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Aakash Chopra, who wondered whether the team management sees Iyer as an all-rounder.

However, To put things into further context, he was picked to be a batter who could bowl medium pace – the rarest of rare combinations on the Indian circuit. With Hardik Pandya’s bowling fitness continuing to be an issue, the Indian team management called upon Iyer in a bid to groom him for a similar role.

Selectors and management have shown faith in Venkatesh Iyer by fast-tracking him into the national team setup. But the fact remains that they will never know how ready he is for international cricket unless he is thrown into the deep end of the pool.
